MAR 30 - NAPSTER ROCKS SUNSET STRIP, GIVES LUCKY ATTENDEES FREE FILLS, REFILLS AND THRILLS WITH "NAPSTER TO GO"

by Don Rose

(March 30, 2005: West Hollywood, CA) As we all remember, Napster rocked our world back in the Dot Com Boom, by making Peer To Peer music downloading a household phenomenon -- and inspiring millions to huddle around the "comp-fire" to upload/download millions of tunes. Cut to today: a new mini Net Boom of sorts is back, and the Cat has come Back in a big way in its battle with Apple for music downloading supremacy -- first by relaunching (as a fine pay service), then topping itself with its unique new service called NAPSTER TO GO. The key New Thing here: PORTABILITY OF SONGS, allowing N2GO subscribers to download and listen to an UNLIMITED amount of music, and do so on (certain compatible) MP3 players, as long as a low monthly $14.95 fee is paid. So, if you are the type who, say, buys at least 1 new CD each month, on average, that same general price can instead get you all the songs you want (on a PC or an MP3 player, at home or on the road).

To promote the consumer launch of Napster's portable subscription service (the world's first), the Cat got the word out with a Big Bang here in L.A., remaking Mel's Diner on the Sunset Strip into the Napster To Go Cafe', with celebs like Nick Lachey in attendance. Lucky music lovers were treated to a lot of FREE tunes, FREE coffee -- and, yes, even FREE MP3 players! (The latter being the amazingly cool iRiver H10 5GB MP3 Player, which not only holds upwards of a thousand tunes but can display photos, record FM or your voice, and a lot more...)

To read the full story, please see the N2GO article in our TRR MUSIC section.

MAR 27: LAST DAY for BODYWORLDS2 at CSC

Don't miss the second installment of the hugely popular BODY WORLDS, at the California Science Center, downtown Los Angeles. BODY WORLDS 2 features 200 new specimens which bring further insights about human anatomy, physiology and health not available in the previous exhibit. Highlights include the "Suicide by Fat--Obesity Revealed" specimen, which shows fat tissue and its relentless, unremitting ability to shorten life by damaging vital organs like the heart and bones. "Orthopedic Man" demonstrates a variety of surgically implanted orthopedic devices. These and other real preserved human specimens reveal new views of the body in mesmerizing detail. BODY WORLDS 2 is gone for good on March 27.

MAR 20 - Event Review: WHEELS AND DOLL BABY LA LAUNCH PARTY

3 Tiered ruffle skirt with pink trim

As another whirlwind Fashion Week drew to a close, Wheels and Doll Baby had their LA Launch Party at a very cool venue indeed, far from the madding crowds of Smashbox: the penthouse suite of the infamous Chateau Marmont on the Sunset Strip.

Ballet Dress with Hot Pink bow
Hosted by Mark Greensmith of the Divinyls, the event marked the debut in the U.S. of one of Australia's hottest brands. On view were several varieties of cute outfits, beautifully designed, with several beauties on hand to model them live. The Sydney-based company calls their creations "Clothes to Snare a Millionaire", and I can see why; the fashions were bright, light, frilly and gorgeous. One of the models told me the outfits can be worn out to clubs (presumably where millionaires might be hanging out) -- or, for those less daring, as lovely lingerie.

Pleat bra top with Satin panel

The exclusive party included celebs such as actor David Keith and some familiar rock faces that included (in addition to Greensmith) a member of Blondie and, I am told, Ozzy Osbourne (I didnt actually see him, but it was very crowded, after all, and the lively buzz drowned out any mumbling ozzorisms that might have been wafting through the night air).

Ruffle Bum Dress

One surprise was the lack of mounds of cigarette fumes I expected to experience on the outdoor covered patio. But then, as I gazed down on the Strip and the huge Absolut bottle, I remembered that, just as it replaced the longtime Strip-welcoming Marlboro sign, liquorish beverages in a bevy of flavors have replaced cigs as the "in" legal vice (at least in the states). Many drinks did flow at the party, tasty appetizers were passed (my favorite: incredible risotto cakes), a good time was had by all, and there were even giftbags for those who managed to snag one (white ladies underwear inside).

MAR 20 - Event Review: NATURAL PRODUCTS EXPO WEST

by Don Rose

(March 20: Anaheim, CA) Natural Products Expo West is billed as the world's largest natural and organic products trade show, and I can see why. Roaming the show floor at the Anaheim Convention Center (which takes all day, or better, two), I saw hundreds of booths -- there were finished products, the ingredients that make the products, as well as the supplies and services that help retailers sell them. Natural and organic product lines galore. NPEW has been bringing together top buyers and sellers for 25 years. Exhibitors at this Expo, I was told, reach the largest number of active, qualified natural and organic products buyers of any tradeshow on the west coast. Certainly it was the largest number of buyers of natural and organic products I had ever seen under one roof.
Natural Products Expo West - outside Anaheim Convention Center
With over 250,000 square feet of exhibiting space, representing every category in the industry, this is a must-see event if you sell, buy or write about natural and organic products. From established categories to emerging markets, Natural Products Expo West showcased the products and services driving the growth of the natural and organic industry.
Natural Products Expo West - the lively, crowded lobby
Thousands of buyers, sellers, media folks and VIPs attended the show from all over the world. Some highlights from the show floor: Two Laker girls signed pictures of their squad... Ed Begley Jr. touted his product line, Begley's Best -- environmentally friendly cleaning products available exclusively at www.EdBegley.com ... WILEY BOOKS had a booth featuring many excellent health-related tomes, including the new hardcover "FEED YOUR GENES RIGHT" by Jack Challem, which touts the new science of "nutrigenomics" (using what you eat to turn off disease-causing genes and slow down aging)... speaking of books, Irwin Zucker, founder of the BPSC (Book Publicists of Southern California), made the rounds at the show, along with author Bruce Braunstein (the next BPSC event is April 7 at the Sportsmen's Lodge)... speaking of sportsmen, MAGNA Rx was one of several libido-enhancing supplements being promoted at the show; they claim to be the top seller -- look for it at GNC stores... which reminds me, many VITAMIN vendors showcased a panoply of products as well, ranging from CalMax (surely you have seen that infomercial where Dr. Pinker tells you you haven't been getting enough calcium? Yes you have -- and you haven't!) to a product called Ultimate Cleanse from Natures Secret, which works wonders for your colon... and as far as FOOD was concerned, well, can you say "oh boy, SOY ahoy"? There were soy-based products everywhere.... including soy pasta, soy chips, and soy milk (the soy milk made by 8th Continent surprised me with how great it tastes -- better than any Vanilla I ever had, and that was the LIGHT version; cant wait to try their regular Vanilla)... and how can I help but heap heavenly praise on hemp, there were several examples of that wonderful stuff too, including Hemp Seeds, Hemp Oil and... say, can it be long before some bright biz whiz markets a line of Three Stooges brand seeds called sHemp Hemp? Oh well, I can't help it if I get so many ideas, just send me a royalty check... AND FINALLY, kudos to ETHOS, who sell a bottled water that not only tastes great, but also (via donating a portion of profits) helps kids worldwide get safe drinking water. Did you know that over one BILLION children on Earth do NOT have access to safe drinking water? I sure didn't. So do your body AND soul good, with something so good -- try Ethos Water (more info at www.ethoswater.com). And Ethos, if you're listening: put a number "2" between-and-under the H and O in your name -- H2O in your logo would look cool, and natural...
Dr. Weil speaking at the Nutracon Show, co-located with Natural Products Expo West

Overall RoseRating for this show: Excellent. Mark your calendar for next year's tradeshow dates: MARCH 24 - 26, 2006, once again at the Anaheim Convention Center. If you are in the natural product biz, or in the media, do yourself a flavor: Don't miss it.

MAR 17: MICHAEL GARLINGTON ART RECEPTION, STEPHEN COHEN GALLERY

< style="font-style: italic;">MICHAEL GARLINGTON: PORTRAITS FROM THE BELLY OF THE WHALE, March 17 – May 7, Stephen Cohen Gallery; Opening Reception Thursday, March 17 From 7 – 9PM <>

(Los Angeles, CA) – Hosted by the internationally acclaimed Stephen Cohen Gallery, located at 7358 Beverly Boulevard, Michael Garlington - Portraits from the Belly of the Whale will feature a gathering of the strange, unique and depraved, captured in black & white photographs, shot while touring the country in his image-plastered “Photo Car” – literally a Volkswagen covered with his photographs – searching for the truth. Garlington shoots portraits of whatever speaks to him - from a contortionist to a fast food worker, from the disabled to a young patriot, his work is about ordinary Americans leading ordinary lives, yet there is something awry. Inside the work is a deeply felt affection for humanity in all its permutations and expressions, in all its horror and triviality. The resulting body of work offers a critical, offbeat, and humorous view of the United States —a portrait of the “belly of the whale.”

<>The public is invited to attend the opening reception on March 17 from 7 – 9PM. Following the event, the gallery will resume its regular hours scheduled on Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and by appointment. For additional information on the exhibition, which runs through May 7, please call 323.937.5525 or visit www.stephencohengallery.com.

MAR 9-26: SANDRA BERNHARD AT L.A.’S SILENT MOVIE THEATER

KICKS OFF NEW U.S. TOUR, "EVERYTHING BAD AND BEAUTIFUL”; ALSO GUESTSTARS ON NBC’S “CROSSING JORDAN” AND SHOWTIME’S “THE L WORD”

You know her, you love her. And I don't mean just you, David Letterman, I mean all of you, you know who you are, damn it! Yes, SANDRA BERNHARD — iconoclast, actress, author, comedian, singer — is set to launch a U.S. tour of her eclectic new show, EVERYTHING BAD AND BEAUTIFUL, with a run of performances at the (now-not-so-silent) Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax (near Melrose) in Los Angeles, March 9 through 26. The show – an extravaganza of riotous comedy, reckless rock ‘n’ roll, and trenchant social commentary – is Ms. B at her fearless and versatile best. (NOTE: amazing virtuoso violinist Lili Haydn is set to sit in with Sandra on one or more of the shows, yet another reason to get your butts down to the SMT.)

As combative as it is perceptive, Sandra’s latest work is in part a sparkling collage of classic bits and pieces from her past work, putting her ever-evolving platform for pop culture, politics, passion, pathos and truth on full display. At the same time, her latest assaults on the lunacy of America’s political and cultural landscape reveal a vanguard performer who is as sharp as ever after nearly 30 years on stage.

Meanwhile, Sandra joined the cast of NBC’s hit crime drama Crossing Jordan, guest starring as a sexy, no-nonsense detective Roz Framus for the February 13 episode. In the episode, Sandra’s character teams up with Bug (Ravi Kapoor) to unravel the events leading to the death of a kidnapped vagrant. Sandra reprises her role as Detective Framus in a pair of episodes set to air later in the season. Sandra also has begun an extended guest role as an author and writing teacher on Showtime’s The L Word, which began its second season last month.

Sandra's previous credits include: “I’m Still Here…Damn It!”, which appeared on Broadway, “Without You I’m Nothing,” and “Excuses For Bad Behavior.” On the big screen she has been seen in The King Of Comedy, Somewhere In The City, Inside Monkey Zetterland, Hudson Hawk and Track 29 -- while on television, Bernhard had a regular (and groundbreaking) role on Roseanne and guest turns on Law & Order: SVU, Ally McBeal, Chicago Hope, The Sopranos and Will & Grace. Ms. B also hosted her own talk show, The Sandra Bernhard Experience, on A&E. Her books include: "Confessions of A Pretty Lady", "Love, Love, and Love" and "May I Kiss You on the Lips, Miss Sandra?".

MAR.3, EVENT REVIEW: Planned Parenthood Food Fare 2005

PPLA's Famous Food Fare Delivers Once Again, Tantalizing Tinseltown Tastebuds

by Don Rose

(Santa Monica CA: March 3, 2005) More than 150 of Los Angeles' best restaurants, caterers, wineries, florists, and entertainers gathered at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium for Planned Parenthood Los Angeles' (PPLA's) always-popular Food Fare, one of the agency's largest annual fundraisers. Started in 1979, Food Fare has become the oldest and one of the most recognized food events in L.A. FF'05 enabled restaurant enthusiasts, Planned Parenthood supporters and the general public to sample the finest food and drink that L.A. has to offer, all in one place. Among the hundreds who attended were celebs such as director John Landis ("Animal House", "Blues Brothers") and former-DA-now-hot-photog Gil Garcetti.

Restaurant critic, author, and radio host Merrill Shindler has said that "...for sheer culinary pleasure, there's nothing like the Planned Parenthood Food Fare -- a tribute to the tasty culinary diversity of LA!" And the Food Dude is, as always, correct. Some of this reporter's faves included perennial participant Pink's (with several varieties of Hot Dogs, and even Ms. Pink there herself, wearing -- what else -- a pink jacket)... The Republic of Tea (among the best ice tea in a bottle I have ever tasted -- I especially love their Peach -- healthy, crisp taste)... Dandy Don's delectable ice cream... Daily Grill's excellent Caesar Salad and Peach Cobbler... and James Beach's French Toast (I assume that wacky Freedom Toast name phase has passed by now, so I can go by the real name without fear of being Bushwhacked? Good...... -- actually, this restaurant's "Coast Toast" is made with two-inch thick California sourdough bread smothered in pure maple syrup, so popular it ran out). One of the nice features of PPLA's Food Fare is that, James Beach notwithstanding, the food and drink rarely runs out before the event ends, something not every food fest can claim.

In addition to offering great cuisine, Food Fare featured a silent auction with arts and crafts, vacation packages, sporting and entertainment event tickets, fine art from local artists, and gift certificates from L.A.’s best restaurants. Plus, as they do every year, PPLA provided a booth with useful literature, cute bumperstickers ("Don't Just Do It", one implores) and free condoms for all.

Food Fare raises funds to support PPLA’s health care services, responsible sex education, and advocacy programs. Last year’s Food Fare drew more than 1,600 people and raised $500,000 for the agency. Food Fare is produced by the Planned Parenthood Los Angeles Guild, a group of 200 women who are dedicated to providing financial and volunteer support for PPLA. Since the group’s inception more than 20 years ago, the Guild has raised over $5 million for PPLA.

About Planned Parenthood Los Angeles

PPLA is the largest provider of reproductive health care services in Los Angeles County. It provides clinical services to more than 61,000 people a year, 87% of whom come to the agency for birth control and 97% of whom require some financial assistance for their care. PPLA outreach programs deliver sexuality and family planning education to nearly 115,000 teens, women and men a year. Through the Planned Parenthood Los Angeles County Advocacy Project, the agency is also a leading advocate for reproductive rights.

To get a jump on next year's tickets, see www.pplosangeles.org or call 310-395-0098.
